Dr Pang talks to Fintan Walton about biotechnology trends in China. Dr H Ming Pang obtained his Bachelor's degree and Doctorate in the UK, and is a well-established and key opinion leader in the Chinese pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. He has worked extensively with major global pharmas and his portfolio has included SmithKline Beecham UK, Glaxo Wellcome UK and Norton Healthcare UK.

During his time at Glaxo, Dr Pang was part of the International Division, where he was responsible for a rich repertoire of activities, such as GMP audits, troubleshooting and project management for the company's worldwide operations. He was also the first project manager appointed for Glaxo China and was heavily involved in the establishment of the first development and manufacturing facility for inhalation systems in Chongqing.

Through his experience in research, development, technology transfer, manufacturing, marketing and general management, Dr Pang has acquired invaluable expertise in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector. He now shares his knowledge by sitting on the Boards of various pharmaceutical venture companies in both Hong Kong and mainland China, and is actively involved in technology management and commercialisation enterprises between the East and the West.

Dr Pang played a pivotal role in the signing of a recent licensing agreement between GlaxoSmithKline and Simcere Pharmaceuticals for the rights to manufacture and sell the antiviral influenza treatment zanamivir - the active ingredient in Relenza@reg; - in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and all the Least Developed Countries.
