In this exclusive interview, Fintan Walton talks to Graham Brazier, Vice President and Head of Business Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS), about the world of big pharma business development and the process of in-licensing. Because the interview took place at the AusBiotech 2007 conference, particular reference is made to the importance and challenges of making deals in Australia. Graham also details the rationale between BMS’ collaborations with fellow big pharma companies AstraZeneca and Pfizer, as well as discussing BMS’ acquisition of Adnexus.

Before joining Bristol-Myers Squibb as Vice President and Head of Business Development in April 2002, Graham Brazier was Senior Vice President, Corporate Development, 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals, where he was responsible for business and corporate development as well as developing and maintaining relationships with investment banks and the investment community. Before this, he was Vice President, Worldwide Business Development, Pharmaceuticals, at SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline), responsible for co-promotion agreements, in- and out-licensing, research collaborations, patent licences, biotech acquisitions and various other strategic alliances.

Bristol-Myers Squibb manufactures prescription pharmaceuticals in several therapeutic areas, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and psychiatric disorders. It is also the parent company of Mead Johnson Nutrition, which manufactures nutritional products such as Enfamil baby formulas and infant vitamin supplements like Tri-Vi-Sol.
