Peter Cook talks to Fintan Walton about Biota's ongoing business strategy and drug development programmes. Mr Cook discusses the various challenges that biotech companies must face in order to remain successful, including the necessity to balance diversification and specialisation, and the risks and rewards of raising capital in overseas markets. They also talk about Biota's success with Relenza™ and the ongoing management of its relationship with GlaxoSmithKline, as well the licensing of Biota's lead RSV compound to MedImmune.

Peter Cook was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Biota on 9 December 2005. Before joining Biota, he was Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Orbital Corporation Ltd, a powertrain engineering company with unique technologies in direct injection of internal combustion engines. Mr Cook previously held the positions of Chief Executive Officer of Faulding Pharmaceuticals, President of Ansell's Protective Products Division, Deputy Managing Director of Invetech and Director of Research and Development for Nicholas Kiwi. He has had extensive experience in restructures, mergers and acquisitions, and in innovation and innovation commercialisation with technology-based companies; he also has a strong manufacturing background. Mr Cook has extensive business experience within Australia, and has over 10 years of international commercial experience in Europe, the US and Asia, where he has both lived and worked. Mr Cook holds a Masters Degree in Pharmacy and postgraduate qualifications in Management. He is a non-executive Director of Quickstep Holdings Ltd.
