Fintan Walton talks to John Clerici, a partner in McKenna Long & Aldridge, whose practice is in Public Health Preparedness. This interview covers the funding available from the US Government to commercial companies for the development of technologies to protect public health (such as the prevention of flu pandemics and other viral outbreaks) and bioterrorism. Since 9/11, the US Government has increased its spending on these areas and will partner with companies (US or non-US) to accelerate the development of relevant products. John Clerici also covers what commercial organisations should be aware of in entering into these partnerships, and what they should be aiming for. Executed correctly, partnerships with the US Government can result in a product that benefits both public health and the fight against bioterrorism, and the pharmaceutical or biotech company concerned.

John Clerici is a partner in McKenna Long & Aldridge’s Government Contracts practice and government affairs group. He also serves as co-chair of the Firm’s Public Health practice. John's practice centres on working with new entrants to the government market-place and assisting existing government contractors to develop effective government affairs strategies for selling goods and services to the federal, state and local governments, particularly in the biopharma arena. John's practice focuses chiefly on Homeland Security and, in particular, on the policy and legislative aspects of how the government procures anti-terrorism technology from the private sector. He has extensive experience in advising clients engaged in public/private partnerships with the federal government.
