Anthony Holmes, Programme Manager, NC3Rs talks to Adrian Dawkes about their UK government backed pioneering work. NC3Rs is an abbreviation for the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction in Animal Research. It is the UK's national organisation which leads the discovery and application of new technologies and approaches to replace, reduce and refine the use of animals for scientific purposes, something they call the 3Rs. This isn't just about ethics, it's an initiative to support industry to address scientific concerns and limitations with animal testing models, and where possible replace these with different models. Example Models are given such as Organs on Chips, Tissue Engineering, Computational and Mathematical Models. NC3Rs offers financial support and awards to companies developing new models and for those starting adopting these new models.

NC3Rs
The NC3Rs is a UK-based scientific organisation dedicated to replacing, refining and reducing the use of animals in research and testing (the 3Rs). We collaborate with scientists and organisations from across the life sciences sector, nationally and internationally, including universities, the pharmaceutical, chemical and consumer products industries, other research funders, and regulatory authorities. We support the commitment of the scientific community to the 3Rs by funding research and early career development, supporting open innovation and the commercialisation of 3Rs technologies, and stimulating changes in policy, regulations and practice.
